1. Used within the Postal Canton Belgian

First day of use within the postal canton

Postcard #1 sent on January 1st 1871 at 2pm from the train station post office of LIÉGE(GUILLEMINS) to an address in the city (E/V = ‘en ville’). The printed postage stamp on the card is cancelled with the big double-circle date cancel, introduced in 1864. The rate for sending a postcard within the postal canton was 5 centimes (1.1.1871-31.12.1871).

The single-circle arrival date cancel was placed on the back the card and shows the arrival in the central Liège post office between 5 and 6pm. This type of date cancel with the dual hour indication was introduced in 1870.

Only two First-Day #1 cards are known used inside a canton.

Second day of use within the postal canton

Postcard #1 sent on January 2nd 1871 from the main post office of BRUXELLES to an address in the city. The printed postage stamp on the card is cancelled with the small double-circle date cancel, introduced in 1870. For an inexplicable reason the sender did attach an additional 10 centimes postage stamp of the 1869 issue on the card. It is cancelled with the rhombus cancel, introduced on April 15th 1864. There is no arrival date cancel on the card, as it stayed locally.
